Fawlty Towers documentary filmed at The Marstan

Two one-hour documentaries were filmed partly at the Marstan Hotel in Torquay to celebrate the 30-year anniversary of the well-loved sitcom Fawlty Towers.


Ian Krender, proprietor said "It was unusual to see television greats such as Trevor McDonald, Terry Gilliam and Prunella Scales, amongst others, being interviewed in various rooms throughout the hotel. Our favourite was actor David Kelly who played Mr O’Reilly the hapless Irish builder in the episode "The Builders". He was interviewed in our snug bar and proceeded to do impressions of himself as Mr O’Reilly."


He added "It was great fun filming with the professional production crew" stated Ian Krender. "We are proud to have been part of this documentary about one of the all time classic comedies".


The documentary aired on UK G.O.L.D. this summer and will be repeated on various freeview channels throughout 2009 and 2010.


This is not the first time The Marstan has appeared on national television. In 2008 Ian and Craig welcomed Hotel Inspector, Alex Polizzi,  in order to use The Marstan as an example of a well-run Torquay hotel for the struggling Number Nine. This was aired in August 2008 on Channel 5 to an audience of around three million and is still repeated on various freeview channel

Channel 5 spent a day filming at the Marstan, one of the best small hotels in Torquay. “It was a pleasure to meet Alex” said Craig McGill. Alex was very impressed with the small Torquay hotel, which was held up as an example to struggling guest-house Number 9. Alex told the proprietors “I can see why the Marstan is one of the top Torquay hotels. The attention to detail is excellent and I love the opulent theme running throughout the bedrooms”.


The Marstan makes finalist for AA landlady of the year

Craig McGill, proprietor attended a luncheon in Central London hosted by the AA for the finalists of the AA Landlady of the year award. Craig stated “We were delighted to be narrowed down to the top 15 hotels in England out of several thousand and thank all the guests that nominated us”.


Craig also added his thanks to the AA for such a pleasant lunch as well as an inspired speech from the AA Director of Hotel Services though did make a the point that perhaps in the 21st century the word Landlady should be changed. The Marstan is one of the highest rated Torquay hotel


New pool receives big thumbs up from guests!

Work was completed at the end of May on our new swimming pool which meets all the latest health and safety legislation. An added bonus is that due to the deep end depth being reduced by approximately a metre it has proved to be much easier to heat making for a better guest experience.


Nick Southwood a regular client at the Marstan said “The decking around the pool really enhances the whole garden which is looking stunning”. He added “It is particularly nice at night with the lighting around – a nice place to have a drink”. Ian Krender the proprietor said “We are delighted with the finish of the new pool, the pool company were very professional and have used the best quality products on the market to produce a beautiful area to swim and sunbathe”.
